Mixologist of The Month – Priscilla Dikko
Priscilla Dikko is our mixologist of the month. Amiable and very pleasant, you can’t find her without a smile on her face. She describes herself as a very ambitious, hardworking and passionate person. In her own words… “I am enthusiastic about taking up new challenges in life. Friendly, witty, accommodating, giving and joyful is what my friends would describe me as. I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic. On weekends, to let off steam, I do intense workouts, Yeah! I am a fitness addict. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life and I have decided to live it to the fullest”.
How did you get into the cocktail/mixing business?
It wasn’t by chance. I wanted to create great flavors and experiment, my creative mind needed to be explored and cocktails provided the avenue. Whenever I attended an event or visit a bar, I would be lost in thought on how I could have better presented a cocktail or created something unique for the menu. In June 2017 I took the bold step to enroll and got trained as a mixologist, though I started out as an event manager and luckily for me both services go hand in hand.
What’s your favorite cocktail and why?
I actually have two favourite cocktails. The first is Pina Colada (Non Alcoholic ) and the Skinny Coconut Margarita (Alcoholic), both have one ingredient that I love and that is coconut milk. They are both yummy, just talking about it makes me thirst for them.
Do you have a signature cocktail? Share it with us.
It is called the Spiced Teaser
· Fresh lemon juice
· Honey syrup
· Fresh Strawberry
It is an all-round guest pleaser. It appeals to those who like a strong whiskey cocktail as well as those who prefer something fruity and light.
What are some of your favorite ingredients when mixing?
A must use for me is Grenadine syrup, Lemonade and my favorite the Pina Colada Mix.
How would you describe the drinking habits of men?
As expected men still exceed women in drinking and high-volume drinking (ok let’s say that’s my opinion). Men are usually faithful to their choice bottle, you have to do a lot convincing to get them to try out a cocktail menu.
And the drinking habits of women?
The women are catching up trust me, when I started, I needed the women on my side. A lot of effort is put into the cocktail to make it as appealing as possible and women are very visual so the process is pretty straight forward you make it appealing to the women first and you can easily get them to have a taste, and recently I noticed that women want their alcohol as much as they want the beauty in the mix.
What are some of the challenges associated with the business?
The need to constantly update your knowledge about mixing drinks, the pressure to always be innovative could be difficult but it is the most important part of the job. We have to constantly up our game in taste and creativity. Also damages to glassware are inevitable so we have to constantly replace as they go out of fashion, break or get old.
Is this what you’ve always wanted to do?
It all started with my passion for events and my love for creating things, I also wanted to do something more than just planning and coordinating events, cocktails was the perfect avenue for me to explore my creativity more and play around mixing different drinks and come up with something people would love. I found mixing drinks and I fell in love with it
